Old Meade County Jail to become Jailhouse Pizza

When the tornado of 1974 devastated Main Street in Brandenburg, the face of downtown Brandenburg changed drastically. There’s been a recent movement to revitalize Main Street, and builder Ronnie Ables, a resident of Brandenburg, is a hands-on part of that movement.

Mayors of three cities share thoughts at Chamber luncheon

The mayors of all three cities in Meade County – Brandenburg, Ekron, and Muldraugh – shared their thoughts on the futures of their cities at the Jan. 25 Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at the Meade County Extension office in Brandenburg.


County attorney and staff ‘hit the floor running’

“We’ve hit the floor running,” said newly-elected county attorney Margaret Matney. “The staff has been doing a wonderful job. I’m thrilled.”


The job of the Meade County Attorney’s office

The office of the county attorney first came into being with the Kentucky Constitution of 1850. Today’s Constitution requires a county attorney be at least 24 years of age, a citizen of Kentucky and resident of the state for two years, a resident of the county for one year prior to the election, and a licensed practicing attorney for two years prior to the election. The election of the county attorney occurs every four years.


Business as usual for Meade County school calendar

Rumors have been circulating regarding the last day of school in Meade County. At this time, the last day of school is scheduled for May 15, and the school system is on track for that day. Winter, however, is not over, and there may yet be a snow day to contend with.


Meade PZ denies ‘spot zoning’ request

The Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission held its regular meeting Jan. 18 with one rezoning request on the agenda. Wesley Prather requested rezoning of 1.2 acres of a 3.10-acre parcel on Whelan Road from R-1 to R-4 so his adult child can place a singlewide mobile home on the parcel. The surrounding area is composed of single family housing and farm land.


Conservation District votes in favor of hiring 50-50 cost share employee

The Meade County Conservation District held its monthly meeting on Jan. 22, with board members John Bruington, Jack King, Henry Pike, Jim Scott, Nathan Beavin, Joe Barger, and Fred L. Sipes present. Also in attendance were employees Calvin Bohannon, B.J. Stith, and Charlotte Lawson.


Ethics Commission considers new internal legal procedures

Meade County Ethics Commission chair Joanne Fitzgibbon chaired a special work session and meeting Jan. 22. The new County Attorney Margaret Matney was on hand to provide legal advice and all members were present except Joe Bewley. The group worked extensively upon its internal procedures regarding the receipt of ethics complaints. They revised the financial disclosure


Fiscal Court holds special meeting, ends 109 Board

Meade County Judge Executive Harry Craycroft convened and chaired a special called meeting of the Meade County Fiscal Court Jan. 24. All members of Fiscal Court were present. Agenda items included the second readings of ordinances altering two road service districts and finalizing the dissolution of the 109 Board. All second readings passed unanimously, but it was the quick finality of Ordinance 2007-01, at last dissolving the 109 Board as the “governing body” of solid waste management in Meade County which was significant.
